iPhone:Using iPhone and iPad together
From ViewRanger Wiki
Maps that you've bought through the ViewRanger store or from a retailer for another phone can be copied between iPhone and iPad or visa-versa. The process involves exporting the maps off the iPhone, to the PC, then uploading the maps to the iPad or visa-versa.

Software
If you have already purchased ViewRanger from iTunes you do not need to re-purchase ViewRanger for anouther Apple device such as the iPad. Use your iTunes to restore ViewRanger onto the iPad. And visa-versa; already purchased for iPad, no need to re-purchase for iPhone.
Activation / License key (self service via my.viewranger.com)
If the map is already activated on another phone then, if not already done so, please register with my.viewranger.com. If you need more help with login to my.viewranger.com please see these instructions. Once you have registered successfully you can generate your own new license keys for the new device as follows:
- On the new device in ViewRanger go into Organizer
> Settings > Account and license > Account sign in and enter your my.viewranger.com credentials and press submit. Choose the Add this device option (note: this option is not available if you have reached your maximum device limit). The device will synchronize with my.viewranger.com and the license key list is updated.
Activation / License key (via email to support)
If the map is already activated on another phone then please email support to get a new license key. Please include both the iPhone's UDID and the iPad's UDID and the email address you used to first activate.
You can get the UDID as follows:
- Run iTunes and connecting your iPhone. Click on the device on the left hand side column. In the main window look at the Summary tab. Towards the top you'll see a line saying "Serial:" followed by a short string - click on it so it changes to "Identifier (UDID)" followed by a long string, then use the copy short cut Ctrl-C or Apple key-C. When you paste into the email you should get the 40 character UDID matching what is displayed in iTunes.
Copying maps
To copy maps between the two devices:
- Maps you downloaded in-app using ViewRanger store
- This applies to maps you download in-app using ViewRanger store - for example, maps you pay for in-app, or free overview maps.
- The easiest way to get these onto your second device is to re-download using the App Store Restore setting on the second device, in the same way you first downloaded.
- As long as you use the same iTunes account, iTunes will not charge you again as it knows you own the map.
- You'll then receive the license key for these maps automatcially.
- Map tiles
- This applies to map tiles you downloaded using the grid over the map.
- Copy these between the devices using iTunes file sharing, following the steps in the section below. First copy them to your computer, then copy them onto the second device.
Step by Step Copying Maps using iTunes
- Copy the maps off the first device
- Connect the device that currently contains the maps to your computer using the USB cable.
- [ViewRanger v2.2.2 only: in ViewRanger, go to Organizer > Import/export and press "Export maps library".]
- Run iTunes on the computer.
- Select the device, middle left.
- Select the Apps tab, middle top.
- Scroll down to the File sharing section and select ViewRanger. The list of files on the device appears lower right. Maps you downloaded using ViewRanger on the device are in the Maps folder.
- Select the Maps or MapsExport folder, then press "Save to..." and direct iTunes to save the folder to a known location.
- You now have a folder on your computer containing all the Maps from your device.
- Copy the maps onto the second device
- Connect the other device (which does not yet have the maps) to your computer using the USB cable.
- Run iTunes on the computer.
- Select the device, middle left.
- Select the Apps tab, middle top.
- Scroll down to the File sharing section and select ViewRanger. The list of files on the device appears lower right.
- Press the "Add..." button, and select all the files in the Maps folder - use the shift key to select them all. Note you do not need to work out which maps are new, let iTunes do that.
- iTunes copies all the maps onto the device. It will prompt you if any files are already there, choose to skip those.
- Repeat for the files in the DownloadedMaps sub-folder of the Maps folder.
- You can also repeat this for any other folders within Maps.
- Your maps are now on the second device.
- iTunes puts these maps at the top level of Documents. This may seem untidy, but is very useful - maps at the top level you have copied onto the device (e.g. Isle of Man, highlighted in picture above), maps in the Maps folder you downloaded using the device itself.
- Load the maps on the device
Sharing data between devices
The best way to share route route data between devices is via my.viewranger.com The full track data can only be shared via GPX file at this time and not via my.viewranger.com. You can upload a track to my.viewranger.com then convert it to a route and download it on the other device but this does loose a lot of the detail.
Notes
When you download a map over the air it is put into the Maps/DownloadedMaps folder.
If you download a package, it will be unpacked into a sub-folder in Maps.
You can export and upload your maps to the iPhone/iPad using iTunes file sharing. If sending a number of maps it may be best to ZIP up your maps and send them across in one go. We recommend you keep each ZIP file under 1GB in size.
You can also export and upload your maps to the phone using the Wifi Web Interface, but this is not recommended.
