ViewRanger version 1.4.0 and above support has been added for the iTunes version 10 and above 'File Sharing' interface for the import / export of maps and other items via the USB cable connecting your Apple device and computer.

Instructions:

The 'File Sharing' feature in iTunes shows a basic window of the root level only of the ViewRanger home folder on the Apple device. It show the files and sub-folders in the home folder but not the contents of sub-folders. You can import individual and multiple files but not folders. You can export files and sub-folders. You can also delete items with the delete key on your computer but care should be taken with this.

  • Connect device to computer with USB cable and open iTunes.
  • In iTunes, on left, click your device.
  • Click the Apps tab and scroll the page all the way down to 'File Sharing' section.
  • Click on ViewRanger in the App list and, after a few moments, the ViewRanger home folder is displayed under the Documents window on the right hand side of the screen.

Importing maps and other items:

The interface allows you import individual and multiple files but not folders. The map files end in .VRC and the height data in .VRH but also can be zipped-up. The VRM files are not needed.

  • Press the 'Add' button, which brings up a pop-up window titled 'iTunes' (see screen grab right), and select the file from your computer to add files onto the device. Progress will be indicated on the device.
  • Multiple files can be imported at the same time if you open a separate Windows explorer window and select multiple files and drag them all into the Documents window in iTunes. You cannot drag on a folder.
  • If you imported a zip file, then this must be manually un-zipped; open ViewRanger application on the device and select Organizer File:Options.png Import / export > Documents and click the zip, then Import ZIP/VRZ.
  • Lastly, in the ViewRanger application on the device, select Organizer File:Options.png Import / export and Load new data (otherwise you need to close the ViewRanger app and re-start it before you see the new map or item). This is not required if you just un-packed a ZIP file. Note: There is no confirmation message when you press this button.

Exporting and backing up maps and other items:

The interface allows you to export sub-folders and individual files (unlike when you add items).

  • [Version 2.2.2 only: Run ViewRanger, go to Organizer > Import/export and select "Export maps library". If you do not see "Export maps library" move to the next step.]
  • Select a sub-folder or file in the "Documents" window and choose 'save to'.
  • You will be asked to select a folder on the computer into which you wish to save the sub-folder or file.
  • Press 'Select Folder'. Progress will be indicated on the device.

Cannot see File Sharing?:

If you cannot see the file sharing section:

  • Check you have scrolled down the iTunes panel, there is a thin scroll bar on the right hand side. This is very easy to miss.
  • Check you are using iTunes version 10 using Help > About iTunes.
  • Your iPhone/iPad must have iOS 4. Check this on the device using Settings > General > About > Version.
