When you change phone, for example due to an upgrade or a replacement, then to move ViewRanger to the new phone follow the instructions below .

To check which phones ViewRanger runs on see the supported phones page.

1. Download latest software

The easiest way to install the ViewRanger software is to use a mobile web browser on your phone to visit www.viewranger.com/software - this will direct you to the correct version of software. Or if using a computer then the latest version of the ViewRanger software is available from the www.viewranger.com/software. Download and install the appropriate version.

2. Obtain a new license keys

There are two ways to obtain a new license key; generate your own license key or email support.

Generate your own license key

If not already done so, please register with my.viewranger.com. If you need more help with login to my.viewranger.com please see these instructions.

Once you have registered successfully you can generate your own new license keys for the new device using either method below:

a) If an internet data connection is available on the phone;

On the new device in ViewRanger go into Options > Organizer > Settings > Account > Account sign in and enter your my.viewranger.com credentials and press submit. ViewRanger will then request an internet data connection. Once connected, choose the Add this device option (note: this option is not available if you have reached your maximum device limit). The device will synchronize with my.viewranger.com and the license key list is updated.

b) If an internet data connection is not available on the phone;

From the PC log into my.viewranger.com. Click My ViewRanger Account > Add new device. On the My devices page press the Add new device button. Fill in the details of the new device and press save. Next to the new device press the Generate license key button. The license key list will be shown. Enter each license key, one at a time, into the phone from the map screen using Options > Enter license key.

Email Support for a license key

Email support with your new phone's IMEI/id number, which you can obtain by running ViewRanger and choosing Options > Enter license key. We will then give you new license keys. Can you also send us the new phone's make and model so we can send you the correct instructions.

We can check which key(s) you need based on your email address, but if you have changed email address since you first activated please include your old email address(es). Alternatively include your map serial number(s).

You can't use the activate web page or menu item when you change phone.

We will also transfer your remaining over the air download credit to the new phone, along with your download records.

3. Install maps

To install maps there are three options:

  • Move the memory card from the old phone to the new phone.
  • Copy the ViewRanger folder off the old memory card/internal disk onto the new memory card/internal disk. This preserves all your routes, tracks and so on. Either use a memory card reader or use a USB cable to connect the phone to your computer. It is usually easiest to first copy the folder from the old phone to your PC, then copy it from the PC to your new phone. There are more details about copying maps in the installation instructions.

4. Maps downloaded over the air

Over the air maps are stored in the E:\ViewRanger\DownloadedMaps sub-folder, so will have been tranferred to the new phone if you copied the whole ViewRanger folder. Alternatively, just the DownloadedMaps sub-folder from the old phone to the new ViewRanger folder.

If you have lost your phone or ViewRanger folder and do not have a backup, then re-download your maps in the same way that you originally downloaded them. You won't be charged for re-downloading tiles of Great Britain, Ireland, Germany, USA, Sweden, Finland, Norway or Slovenia. However, for Belgium, France, Netherlands and Switzerland you will be re-charged for the tiles, so it is worth keeping a backup to avoid this.

5. Account details

If you have a ViewRanger server account then when you start ViewRanger on the new phone go to Options > Settings. Go to the User section (on keypad based phones press the right key a few times to swap to the User tab). Enter your ViewRanger server user name and password.

If you need to reset your password see the account and password page.
