FAQ General

General questions about the app, store and my.vr website, and for using the map chooser tool.

1. Map chooser tool

1.1. FAQ for the map chooser

  • The map chooser is a program that runs on a windows PC. It allows you to choose, price and order the area of map that you require. Currently you can select:
    • UK mapping at 1:25,000 Explorer or 1:50,000 Landranger scales
    • Finland mapping at 1:20,000 scale
    • France mapping at 1:25,000 scale
    • Ireland mapping at 1:50,000 scale
    • Norway mapping at 1:50,000 scale
    • Germany mapping at 1:50,000
    • Sweden mapping at 1:50,000 scale (a strip to the north of the country is 1:100,000)
    • National Geographic USA mapping at 1:24,000 or 1:100,000 scales
  • The maps shown in the map chooser are just basic overview maps, not the detailed map that you receive.
  • As you choose squares the price is shown on the left hand bar. It can be downloaded from the custom map page.
  • Custom maps include a license for the ViewRanger software. They also include an overview map and a place name gazetteer. For iPhone you also need to have bought the app from the iTunes app store.
  • By default we deliver custom maps by electronic download. If you'd prefer the map to be delivered on CD or on memory card then please choose the media you'd like from the related products list shown underneath the shopping cart list on the store's web page.
  • Once you have placed your order please email or send the map choice file that has been saved to custommap at viewranger dot com. We will check it, generate the map, then email you download instructions and a serial number for the map and software. We guarantee to do this within one working day, but usually do so much sooner than that, often within an hour. Orders placed by mid-evening are usually processed the same day, seven days a week.
  • A more detailed 1:250,000 scale reference map of the UK is included in the current map chooser. Switch to view it using the Underlay menu.
  • You can use previous selections as a reference. Load them using the Overlay menu, the tiles will be shown dark grey.
  • You can open GPX files using the GPX menu - for example, load a GPX file showing your planned route, or points of interest.
  • The GB National Parks are shown on the map chooser map as brown areas. The ViewRanger national parks 1:50,000 product covers all of these areas. If you are choosing a custom map to meet the national parks, then please choose squares based on the brown areas. When we generate the map we will double check and ensure there are no gaps.
  • A map choice file showing the national parks is available. However, to maximise the map that is provided at that price, the ViewRanger GB National Parks 1:50,000 map uses a half-size grid. The map choice file only shows tiles that are fully covered by the national parks product, it does not show squares that are part covered.
  • Maps of Northern Ireland are not generally available, though small parts near the border are available. The area coloured grey on the map does not have coverage. Where tiles are part covered you are only charged for the area that is covered - you can see the coverage percentage in the bottom bar.
  • We are happy to take orders for custom maps by phone. You can either email us the map choice file or can describe the area that you need.
  • If you can't run the map chooser, for example because you have a Mac, then let us know the area and scale you require. We will quote a price and send you one or more JPG images showing the area, so you can check it is correct or request modifications.

  • in-app using Menu tab (in green bar), Map Shop.

3. ViewRanger app

3.1. Network connection

ViewRanger has been designed to work without a mobile phone connection. The majority of its features do not require a connection.

The position is obtained using built-in GPS. The maps and points of interest are stored on the memory card.

There are some optional additional features that do need a mobile network. The network doesn't need to be 3G, it just needs to support data connections, which most do.

The optional features which use the mobile network's data connection are:

  • The sharing facility, which allows you to share points of interest, photos and notes. You can wait and share these items when you have a mobile signal, or are at home or if your phone has wifi do it at home for free. You do need the network to see what other people have shared, though you can store the results of searches as new POI sets. For example, you might search for mines in the Lake District, receive a list of shared POIs and save this as a POI set on your phone. It will appear in the filter so you can switch it on and off, then can delete it if you wish when you are finished with it.

  • Updating the licensed POI data stored on the memory card, which you'd normally do every so often from home.

  • Search. You can search the POIs on your phone and the gazetteer without using the internet connection. If you choose to use the internet too you'll get some additional results, but this is optional.

  • Some phones have an Assisted GPS or A-GPS option. This uses the built-in internal GPS to calculate your location, but it also makes a data connection to a server to obtain satellite information to enable the phone to calculate your position faster and more accurately. If you are out of mobile coverage then the phone reverts to using just the internal GPS. The data transferred using this method is very small.

  • Map download. Normally ViewRanger's maps are pre-installed before setting out. They can be downloaded using a broadband connection or received on CD, DVD or memory card. You can also download additional mapping directly within ViewRanger using a network connection.

Note: the most important features, such as showing where you are on the map, recording the track, and showing navigation information do not require a network connection.

  • Tweets - Fill in your Twitter user name in the Plug inns section in My.ViewRanger.com and any tweets you make during your event will appear on the www.viewranger.com/buddybeacon web page.

Battery life

You need to seriously consider battery life of your device. You can expect a fully charged device to last a daylight day but you should run your own tests. The last thing you want is you track to stop recording half way through a stage!

Consider having a backup device, configured in the same way as you main one, and consider investing in a portable charging product.

The Day of the Event

Doing the following helps to generate interest in your event.

  • Record your track (can be published as a TripTrack after the event stage)
  • Take pictures (will appear on the TripTrack)
  • Tweet (will appear on the BuddyBeacon web page immediately and, later, on the TripTrack)

Record your track

A track is a line drawn on the map showing where you have traveled.
By default, the app will record your track when you lock to GPS.
To start/stop recording a track use stopwatch icon.

Photo tip

If you are going to take pictures on your GPS enabled device; in the camera app settings, enable geo tagging, before you take any shots.

After the Event

When you have completed the event you should publish your recorded track as a TripStories in My.ViewRanger and share it.

Commercial/Large events

Custom page

Please get in contact if you are running a large charity or commercial event and we can advise based on your specific needs.

  • We are able to produce a custom BuddyBeacon web page for large event use. This can incorporate multiple buddies and logos.
  • We do not normally re-brand the app.

4.4. TripStories

When you record a track, in the ViewRanger App, of your walk, cycle, ride or whatever outdoor activity it might be. Then synchronize the track with our community web site My.ViewRanger.com. The website will automatically bring all your social media from Twitter, Picasa, or Flickr created during the time, together on the map, at the location created. This compiles a Trip Journal, or what we like to call TripStory.

Here is an example of a compiled TripStory viewed via our website My.Viewranger.com.

Elements that make up a TripStory

  • The map (use the drop down box to select which type of map to use, including any premium mapping you may have)
  • The recorded track (shown by the red line)
  • Clickable icons for my Tweets Tweet ico.png
  • Clickable icons for my photos (provided by Picasa Picasa ico.png or Flickr Flickr ico.png  photo sharing websites)
Click on one of the Picasa Picasa ico.png icons
you see the photo loaded from
the Picasa website.
Click on one of the Tweet Tweet ico.png icons

the Twitter website.

Share your TripStories

Copy the code

We provide tools to let you show off your track. These are located to the left of the map.
Copy the widget code into your own HTML web and it will appear like this within your separate site.

  • Hide your stuff from public searched:Should be No

Defaults for new uploads

  • Who will be able to see (should be anyone), comment on (should be any Flickr user), add notes, tags and add people (should be your contacts)
  • Who will be able to see your stuff on a map: Should be Anyone
  • Import EXIF location data: Should be Yes

During uploading of photos via the Flickr app ensure it is marked as public and Location Privacy is set to Anyone under Advanced.

Problems using any of the picture services: Can't see your photos?

We've tested through a variety of mobile devices and there are inconsistencies with the information that is stored automatically with each photo (these are beyond our control). For example, sometimes there will be no location information or the service uses the upload time rather than the created date. Either of these mean that we might not be able to find the photo to go with your track. If you're experiencing difficulties, it's worth double check the following:

  • The timezones are set correctly for both your Picasa and my.viewranger.com account
  • That the pictures in Picasa have the correct location and time (this might mean that you need to manually add them)
  • That all the settings /steps listed above have been completed
  • Try adding tags to the plugin and to the photos and refresh the page

4.5. Routes tags

Using tags on your published routes gives other users of the app an easy way to find them.  It is also an alternative way to search for routes other than by name or location.  Using tags is flexible and allows routes can be grouped under the same tag.

For example:  A mountain bike magazine may use the tag #mbuk and #mbuk324 so a user could search for #mbuk and see all routes for the magazine or #mbuk324 just see the routes for issue 324.

In the above example, the user would need to know what tag to search for but in a less formal example you could add the tags #norfolk, #beach and #norfolkbeach to your route to indicate that there is a beach nearby to the route and its in Norfolk- this is a bit more of a generic route search and may return a few routes.

Tags should be specific - a tag like #walk is not good as it may return too many routes in the list.

How it works

Edit the route on the website.

Edit the route on our website.  If you created the route in the app use Cog menu tab, Sycronize content to upload it to the website.
