10.1. GPS settings and Power Save Modes

GPS has a accuracy of plus of minus 5 to 10 meters.  Tree cover and steep valleys will effect the accuracy of GPS.

These settings allow you to better manage the GPS, and potentially, increase battery life.

GPS Power Save Mode

If the GPS Mode is set to "Continuous", then the app will use the GPS continuously.

If the GPS mode is set to "Power save", then the app will use the GPS whenever the app is the foremost, and the screen is not locked. If the screen is locked, or is in the background, then it will disconnect from the GPS. It will re-connect at regular intervals given by the "GPS Interval" setting, for example every 2 minutes. This is ideal if you are sending the beacon, as you only need a position when you are sending the beacon. For a track, this will lead to a less detailed track being recorded.

If you are having problems with track record, leave the setting to "Continuous".

Disconnect GPS now

ViewRanger will stop using GPS, if currently in use.  It will connect to GPS again when necessary for example when you start recording a track.

GPS Auto Disconnect

This is a time setting, default value of 30 seconds. Slide down to 0 to switch this off.

If you leave the app running when you switch to another app or lock the screen, then the app will stop using the GPS after this time. If you are sending the beacon, recording a track or navigating, then the GPS is needed and it will not be stopped.

GPS Single Fix

If this is on, then if you tap the Compass / GPS button on the map screen, the app will connect to the GPS and get a position fix, then disconnect the GPS.

If you are recording a track, sending the beacon or navigating, then this setting is ignored.

This is useful where you want to just occasionally check your position, and not have to remember to stop the GPS.

Heading Vector Time

In the Map view ViewRanger shows an arrow indicating the direction you are travelling in. The length of the arrow is how far you will travel in a given time period. This setting controls that time period. If the value is 10 minutes, the arrow indicates where you will be in 10 minutes time.  The default is 2 minutes.

Stationary Speed

Stationary Speed sets the lowest GPS speed at which you are considered to be stationary. If you are stationary then ViewRanger does not update the heading until you start moving again. So if you walk north, stop and turn around to face south, the heading given by ViewRanger is still North.
If the Stationary Speed is set to 1.5km per hour, then ViewRanger will consider you to be stationary if the GPS receiver reports a speed of 1kmph, but moving if it reports 2kmph.
This figure depends on the accuracy of your GPS receiver and on current conditions – for a receiver with SiRF you might be able to use a figure of 0.5kmph, but for a less sophisticated receiver a figure of 2kmph is required.

Heading Samples

Specify the time over which ViewRanger should sample to work out your heading, smoothing out any errors. For a very accurate GPS receiver you could reduce it to 1 second, which would make the heading more responsive. For a poor GPS or for poor conditions (such as tree cover) then you might increase it to 4 seconds to average out the errors but make it less responsive.

Setting the Stationary Speed and Heading Samples values

Normally the default settings do not need to be changed, but if you find that the heading changes when you are stationary, or vice versa, then adjust Stationary Speed or Heading Samples.
Don't do this while walking or moving.

If the your are occasionally having problems with heading, then either go to Settings > GPS > Stationary Speed and increase its value, or increase the Settings > GPS > Heading Samples.
Repeat the adjustment until the heading stays constant when the GPS is not moving.
Don't use large numbers, values under 3.0km/h should be sufficient – if you choose 30.0km/h you will need to walk at that speed before the heading updates.
